Fireproof mats compared"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the coffee machine, on the worktop or in front of the fireplace: if you want to protect a surface from heat, you have a choice. A rigid board made of tile, stone, glass or steel, or a <strong>fireproof fabric mat<\/strong> such as the FireMat. Here we compare both solutions honestly, with their pros and cons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fireproof board: tile, stone, glass or steel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These materials do not burn. They are therefore classed as non-combustible building materials. That has advantages, but also drawbacks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Advantage:<\/strong> non-combustible and highly heat-resistant.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Advantage:<\/strong> accepted by chimney sweeps as floor protection in front of a fireplace.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Drawback:<\/strong> heavy, angular and often too small.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Drawback:<\/strong> tiles and glass can break. Steel scratches the floor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Drawback:<\/strong> slips on smooth surfaces.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fireproof fabric mat: the FireMat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FireMat is made of Panox and para-aramid. These fibres do not melt and are self-extinguishing. The material also withstands up to 300 \u00b0C continuously. The FireMat is certified by T\u00dcV S\u00dcD according to <a href=\"https:\/\/firemat.de\/en\/din-en-iso-11925-2\/\">DIN EN ISO 11925-2<\/a>. It is made in Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Advantage:<\/strong> light, flexible and available in many sizes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Advantage:<\/strong> washable at 60 \u00b0C.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Advantage:<\/strong> available with a non-slip coating and gentle on the surface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Advantage:<\/strong> plain and homely instead of bulky.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Drawback:<\/strong> not a building material. Where the law requires a non-combustible building material, it does not replace it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What suits which use?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Under the coffee machine and kettle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here the FireMat is usually the better choice. The German DGUV Rule 115-401 calls for a non-combustible base in offices and only mentions tiles as an example. A tested mat does the job, does not slip and fits under large appliances too. That means glass, tile, stone or steel. The FireMat is not expressly approved for this, but it is a great addition. Simply place it on the board: it catches embers and ash and can then be rinsed out in the bathtub.
