It gets very hot and often stands right next to paper and cloths. If it is faulty, it can start a fire. A <strong>fireproof mat for the kettle<\/strong> prevents the fire from spreading to the worktop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is a mat for the kettle mandatory?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the office in Germany: yes, you should have one. The DGUV Rule 115-401 for offices explicitly mentions kettles. In essence it says: place coffee machines and kettles on a fireproof base. Many insurers require this too. You will find all rules at a glance in the guide <a href=\"https:\/\/firemat.de\/en\/do-you-need-a-fireproof-mat-for-electrical-appliances\/\">Fireproof mat for electrical appliances<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At home there is no regulation. However, the mat makes just as much sense there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why a kettle can catch fire<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It heats water to 100 \u00b0C in a short time. The heating element gets very hot.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If it does not switch off because of limescale or a defect, it can overheat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If it is switched on empty, the heating element quickly glows.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cables and bases age. A loose contact can create sparks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which mat is suitable?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mat must not be combustible, and you should be able to prove it. The FireMat is certified by T\u00dcV S\u00dcD according to <a href=\"https:\/\/firemat.de\/en\/din-en-iso-11925-2\/\">DIN EN ISO 11925-2<\/a>. A tile does not burn, but it is heavy and has sharp edges. It slips on smooth surfaces and scratches the worktop. A simple cork or wooden coaster, on the other hand, is itself combustible. A small mat is enough for most kettles.
