What is a fire blanket?
A fire blanket, also known as a flame blanket, is an essential small fire extinguishing device specifically designed to combat initial fires. Its primary effect is to smother the fire by separating oxygen from the combustible material. Made from flame-retardant treated wool, fiberglass fabric, or Nomex, fire blankets offer high heat resistance. In the past, asbestos was often used for this purpose.
Functionality and Application
In the event of a small fire, quick action is crucial. A fire blanket placed over the flames deprives the fire of vital oxygen, smothering it without the need for abrupt cooling or the use of extinguishing agents such as powder or foam. This makes it particularly gentle and efficient. Fire blankets are folded so that they are quickly accessible in a soft bag and can be deployed in seconds. The sturdy, hemmed edges prevent fraying and ensure a long service life.
