Buying safety gloves: what to look out for

Safety gloves protect your hands from cuts, heat and chemicals. But not every glove suits every job: a leather glove helps when welding, for example, but fails with acid. Here you can read what to look for when buying safety gloves.
Which safety gloves are there?
- Leather: robust and good against sparks. However, leather absorbs water.
- Rubber or nitrile: impermeable to liquids and cleaning agents, but they melt in heat.
- Cut protection made of high-tech fibre: protects against blades, sheet metal and glass while staying flexible.
- Aluminised gloves: reflect radiant heat, for example at a wood stove.
What to look for when buying
The right standard
Protective gloves are standardised in Europe. EN 388 describes protection against cuts and abrasion, EN 407 covers protection against heat and fire, and EN 374 applies to chemicals. A pictogram with numbers on the glove shows how well it protects. More information is available on Wikipedia: Glove.
The right size
A glove should fit snugly but not pinch. If it is too large, your grip is unsafe; if it is too small, your hands tire quickly.
Wearing comfort
During long jobs, how the glove feels also matters. Choose a breathable material so that you sweat less and actually wear the gloves.
Care and replacement
Check your gloves for holes and thin spots before every use, and replace damaged gloves immediately. Many fibre models can also be washed; follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
