Desk mat material: which material is the right one?

Which material is right for a desk mat? That depends on what matters to you: appearance, price, care or safety. Here we compare the common materials. We also show why a fireproof material can make sense.

Desk mat material: the options compared

• Faux leather: inexpensive, smooth and easy to wipe. In heat, however, it can melt.
• Genuine leather: elegant and durable. However, it is expensive and does not like water.
• Felt: soft and quiet. However, it absorbs coffee and water.
• Cork: natural and non-slip. However, it stains quickly.
• Plastic: robust and inexpensive. However, it burns and often smells.
• Aramid fabric such as the FireMat: fireproof, non-slip and wipeable.

Why the material matters when things get hot

A desk often holds a laptop, charger and lamp. If they get hot, a plastic mat can melt or catch fire. A mat made of aramid, on the other hand, does not continue to burn. That makes it the safe choice, especially when charging batteries. You can read more in the article Charging your phone on a fireproof mat.

The FireMat desk mat

Our fireproof desk mat is made of aramid fibres with a non-slip coating. It measures 80 × 40 cm and also replaces the mouse pad. Simply wipe off stains with a damp cloth. It is available in black, green, silver and gold.

How do you care for the mat?

Simply wipe faux leather and plastic with a damp cloth. Clean felt and cork only carefully, as they absorb water. Leather needs care from time to time so that it does not crack. Wipe the FireMat with a damp cloth.

And the environment?

Cork and wool felt are natural materials. A durable mat is also kind to the environment, because you have to replace it less often.

Tips for choosing

• Choose a wipeable material if you eat or drink at your desk.
• Make sure it has a non-slip underside.
• Check the size before you buy.
• If electrical devices stand on the desk, a fireproof material is worthwhile.
