Fireproof mat for kettles: rules and tips

Is a mat for the kettle mandatory?

In the office in Germany: yes, you should have one. The DGUV Rule 115-401 for offices explicitly mentions kettles. In essence it says: place coffee machines and kettles on a fireproof base. At home there is no regulation. However, the mat makes just as much sense there.

Why a kettle can catch fire

• It heats water to 100 °C in a short time. The heating element gets very hot.
• If it does not switch off because of limescale or a defect, it can overheat.
• If it is switched on empty, the heating element quickly glows.
• Cables and bases age. A loose contact can create sparks.

Which mat is suitable?
