Fireproof fabric: aramid and Panox simply explained

What is a fireproof fabric?

A fireproof fabric does not start to burn when exposed to heat or flame. It does not melt and does not drip. If the flame is removed, it goes out by itself. Normal fabrics such as cotton, on the other hand, keep burning. Synthetic fibres such as polyester melt and drip.

Aramid and Panox: the fibres of the FireMat

The FireMat consists of a blend of Panox and para-aramid.

• Para-aramid is a very strong and heat-resistant synthetic fibre. It is also used in protective clothing and cut-resistant gloves.
• Panox is a pre-oxidised fibre. It is inherently non-flammable.

Together they create a fabric that withstands up to 300 °C, has no melting point and is self-extinguishing. The FireMat is certified by TÜV SÜD according to DIN EN ISO 11925-2. This standard tests how easily a material ignites.

Fireproof, heat-resistant, flame-retardant: the difference

• Fireproof means in everyday terms: does not burn and withstands flames.
• Heat-resistant means: withstands a certain temperature without being damaged.
• Flame-retardant is a term from the testing of building materials. It states how difficult it is for a material to ignite.

When buying, look for specific information: temperature, test standard and proof.

What you can use fireproof fabric for

Fireproof fabric for sewing

If you want to sew fireproof items yourself, you also need fireproof thread. Normal sewing thread would melt or burn in the heat. The FireMat sewing thread made of aramid fibres is available on large spools.

Kevlar is a well-known brand name for a para-aramid fibre. Para-aramid is the generic term.

Can fireproof fabric be washed?
