A non-conductive fireproof mat protects against heat and does not conduct electricity. This is practical under electrical appliances, when soldering and at charging stations. A metal plate would be fireproof, but it conducts electricity. Here you can read which FireMat editions are non-conductive.
Why doesn’t the FireMat conduct electricity?
The fibres of the FireMat are made of aramid and Panox. Both are synthetic fibres without metal. They therefore hardly conduct electricity. They also do not continue to burn when a flame hits them. Certified by TÜV SÜD according to DIN EN ISO 11925-2.
Which editions are non-conductive?
- Black Edition: pure fabric made of aramid and Panox
- Silk Edition: aramid with a non-slip silicone layer
- GreenSilk Edition: the green variant with silicone
The Silk-A Edition, on the other hand, is an exception. It has an aluminium layer on top. Aluminium conducts electricity. You can read more in the article Aluminium high-vacuum coating.
Important: not an insulating mat
The FireMat is not a tested insulating mat for work on electrical installations. Such mats must meet their own standard. For live working you therefore need special insulating mats. The FireMat, by contrast, protects against heat and fire.
Does a wet mat conduct electricity?
Water can conduct electricity, even on a mat. Wipe up spilled liquid immediately. If water runs into an appliance, unplug it first.
What to look for when buying
- proof of testing for fire behaviour
- a material without a metal layer if the mat should not conduct
- a size that extends beyond the appliance on all sides
- a surface that can be washed or wiped
A non-conductive fireproof mat is particularly useful in kitchenettes with many appliances, because cables and plugs are often close together there.
Typical uses
- under coffee machines, kettles and toasters
- at the soldering station and for crafts
- at the charging station for phones and batteries
- next to power supplies and power strips
