Induction Hob Mat: How to Protect Your Induction Hob

Induction Cooktop Protection against Scratches

An induction hob mat lies between the pot and the hob while you cook. It protects the glass from scratches, catches splashes and keeps spills off the hob. After cooking, you simply take the mat off. Your hob stays clean.

In this guide, you will learn how an induction hob mat works, which size fits and what to look for when buying.

What is an induction hob mat?

It is a thin, heat-resistant cloth. You place it on the hob before cooking. Then you put the pot on it and cook as usual.

The FireMat is made of Panox and para-aramid. These fibres are fireproof. They withstand up to 300 °C, have no melting point and extinguish themselves. The mat is certified by TÜV SÜD according to DIN EN ISO 11925-2.

Does induction work through a mat?

Yes. An induction hob does not heat the glass plate. It heats the base of the pot directly. This happens via a magnetic field. The field simply passes through a thin textile mat. So the pot gets just as hot as without a mat.

The mat itself only gets warm because the hot pot stands on it. That is exactly what it is made for.

The benefits at a glance

  • No scratches: pots and pans no longer rub directly on the glass. Read more in our article avoid induction hob scratches.
  • Less cleaning: spills and grease splashes land on the mat, not on the hob.
  • Nothing slips: the Silk Edition has a non-slip coating. Pots stay in place, even when you stir.
  • Washable: the mat simply goes into the washing machine.
  • Versatile: outside the kitchen, it serves as a fireproof mat for electrical appliances such as kettles or coffee machines.

Who benefits from an induction hob mat?

A new induction hob is expensive. A deep scratch cannot be removed. That is why the mat is worth it, especially in these cases:

  • New kitchen: you want to protect the hob from day one.
  • Rented flat: the hob should be free of scratches when you move out.
  • Heavy pots: cast iron and rough pot bases scratch glass quickly.
  • Many cooks: in families or office kitchens, people do not always cook carefully.

What the mat cannot do

A mat does not replace supervision while cooking. Never leave hot fat unattended. A mat also does not hide old scratches. It only stops new ones.

The pan detection may also react more sensitively to very small pots. So place small pots exactly in the centre of the cooking zone.

Important: only for induction, not for ceramic hobs

The FireMat is suitable for induction hobs. It is not suitable for normal ceramic or glass-ceramic hobs. There, the glass plate itself gets very hot. The heat has to pass through the mat to the pot first. This works poorly and strains the mat.

Not sure which hob you have? An induction hob stays cool next to the pot. A ceramic hob, on the other hand, glows red when it is hot.

Which mat suits you?

The FireMat comes in several versions. For cooking on induction, we recommend these two:

VersionFeatureGood for
Silk Editionnon-slip coatingdaily cooking, lots of stirring
Black Editionuncoated, many sizescovering the whole hob

And the Silk-A Edition? It has an aluminium surface. It does work on induction, but the coating turns brown there and no longer looks nice. That is why we recommend the Silk-A Edition as a mat for electrical appliances, not for cooking.

How to find the right size: measure the area you want to protect. A small mat is enough for one cooking zone. For the whole hob, take a large mat, for example 60 x 70 cm. The Black Edition is available from 19 x 19 cm up to 70 x 100 cm.

How to use the mat correctly

  1. Lay the mat flat on the cold hob.
  2. Place the pot in the centre of the cooking zone.
  3. Cook as usual. Do not heat empty pots or pans on the highest setting.
  4. Let the mat cool down briefly after cooking.
  5. Take the mat off. If it is dirty, wash it.

Tip for the Silk Edition: you can use both sides. If the glossy side faces up, the pot will not slide. If it faces down, the mat stays firmly on the hob, and you can move the pot more easily.

Cleaning and care

Simply wipe off light dirt. If the mat is very dirty, wash it in the washing machine at 60 °C. Use a liquid detergent. Do not use fabric softener, bleach or optical brighteners.

You can find all details in our washing instructions for the FireMat.

Mat, silicone mat or protective film?

There are different ways to protect an induction hob. Each has pros and cons:

  • Textile mat (FireMat): fireproof, washable, can be folded and stored.
  • Silicone mat: cheap and non-slip. Depending on the maker, it may handle less heat. Check the temperature rating.
  • Protective film: stays on the glass permanently. It protects against scratches, but not against spills on the area next to it.

Checklist: what to look for when buying

Many people search for the “test winner” among induction hob mats. These points matter more than a seal:

  • Is the heat resistance clearly stated?
  • Is there a tested certificate, for example according to DIN EN ISO 11925-2?
  • Is the mat thin enough for the hob to detect the pot?
  • Can it be washed?
  • Is there a size that fits your hob?

Frequently asked questions

Does food heat up more slowly with a mat?

Hardly. The magnetic field still heats the pot base directly. The thin mat does not noticeably slow this down.

Can the mat burn?

The FireMat is fireproof. Even at 300 °C it does not ignite, it only chars. It has no melting point and extinguishes itself.

Can I leave the mat on the hob?

Yes, as long as the hob is off, it also protects the glass as a cover. Before cooking, it should lie flat.

Does the mat also fit a gas hob?

Not for cooking over an open flame. There is a separate solution for gas hobs: the gas hob cover.

Where else can I use the FireMat?

For example under kettles, toasters and coffee machines. Read our guide fire safety in the kitchen.

Conclusion

An induction hob mat is the easiest way to protect your hob. It prevents scratches, catches dirt and can be washed. Choose the Silk Edition for non-slip cooking or the Black Edition if you want to cover the whole hob.
