Gas hob cover: how to keep your gas hob clean

Grease, sauce and crumbs quickly end up between the burners when cooking. On a gas hob, cleaning there is particularly tedious. A gas hob cover keeps this area clean. It lies around the burners, catches splashes and can then simply be washed off.

What is a gas hob cover?

The gas burner cover is a thin mat made of glass fabric with a PTFE coating. It measures 27 × 27 cm and has an opening for the burner. The surface is non-stick, so dirt hardly sticks to it.

The advantages

• Less cleaning: grease and crumbs land on the mat instead of the hob.
• Easy to clean: wash off with warm water and washing-up liquid.
• Adjustable: if necessary, cut the opening to size with scissors.
• Light and flat: the mat does not scratch the hob.
• Reusable: you can use the cover again and again.

How to fit the cover correctly

• Let the hob cool down.
• Remove the pan supports.
• Place the mat and cut the opening to size if necessary.
• Put the pan supports back on.
• Make sure the flame does not touch the mat directly.

Important safety notes

PTFE permanently withstands about 260 °C. So never let a flame burn on high without a pan. Never heat the mat directly over an open flame. Do not leave the hob unattended while cooking.

Gas hob cover or FireMat?

The two products have different jobs. The gas hob cover keeps the gas hob clean. The FireMat, on the other hand, is a fireproof mat for electrical appliances and for the induction hob. Do not place the FireMat on a gas hob. For cooking on induction, read the guide Induction protective mat.
