Fire Extinguishers in the Office: Observe These Fire Safety Measures

The outbreak of a fire is one of the greatest hazards in an office. This is frequently underestimated in many companies and institutions. According to classification, an office presents a normal fire hazard, and there are several sources of danger that should be particularly noted in the office environment. One or more fire extinguishers in the office are absolutely essential. Otherwise, liability risks may arise.

The Right Fire Extinguisher for the Office

In an office location, fires typically occur that are assigned to Class A and Class B. Class A involves organic-based materials. These include, for example, textiles or paper. Classification into Class B occurs when fires involve liquid substances. Likewise, electrical fires as well as fires from defective electrical devices represent a real risk. By law, fire extinguisher maintenance is required at intervals of no more than 2 years. According to manufacturer specifications, the extinguishing agent present in the device should also be replaced every 6 to 8 years. After a fire extinguisher has been activated, one should arrange for it to be refilled. A pressure gauge can then be used for verification.

The Fire Blanket as an Alternative

As a supplement to the fire extinguisher, fire blankets should also be kept available in the office. This allows, for example, a burning wastepaper basket to be nipped in the bud and extinguished immediately. Such a blanket should not be reused after use.

Deployment of Fire Safety Assistants

Furthermore, in accordance with Section 10 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Directive 2.2 (Measures against fires and in accordance with the specifications of the statutory accident insurance), employers are obliged to train at least 3 percent of employees as fire safety assistants. This increases operational safety. Such training must be refreshed every 3 to 5 years. These fire safety assistants can then also monitor the presence and condition of fire extinguishers in the office. You can buy fire extinguishers here in our shop.
